October 24th is World Polio Day

Rotary members in Avon Lake, Avon, Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village are among thousands reaching out on October 24, 2016  – World Polio Day to raise awareness, funds and support to end polio – a vaccine preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today.   Our local communities have donated towards the Eradication of Polio while playing our Putt-out-Polio game at our Great Pizza Bake-Offs and Home Depot Safety Fair Events.  Donate while playing the game at our Great Pizza Bake-Off at Brookside High School Cafetorium, on Thursday October 27th, 2016 from 5 PM to 8 PM!

Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative nearly 30 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to 26 confirmed as of Sept. 19, 2016.  To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, experts say $1.5 billion is urgently needed. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk.

Our 12th Annual Great Pizza Bake Off at ALHS was a huge success

Over 500 guests joined us in the Avon Lake High School Commons to sample pizza and vote on their favorite. Our event was emceed by Rotarian James Miller and included face painting and Putt-out-Polio with the help of our youth service organization, Northcoast Interact Club.  The ALHS Key Club helped us prepare and clear tables.

Diners sampled pizza from six vendors including Coleone’s, Domino’s, Doughboy’s, Pizza Hut, Romeo’s and Zeppe’s.  And the winners were: COLEONE’S PIZZA voted People’s Choice; DOUGHBOY’S voted Best Specialty Pizza AND winning the Pro’s Personal Choice; ROMEO’S voted Best Pepperoni Pizza.

We want to thank our community who makes this event successful every year, Avon Lake High School, our club members, event sponsors, our dedicated pizza vendors, Sprenger Heathcare ( delicious desserts), ALHS Key Club and the Northcoast Interact Club.

These charity fund-raisers benefit the Rotary Club’s local Foundation which provides scholarships and support for many youth and service initiatives in the four communities that we serve.

Rotary Fights to Eradicate Polio

Think Polio has been eradicated?   Carolyn Huston, District 6600 chair for the Polio Plus campaign, updated North Coast Rotary Club on the fight.  Thirty years ago when Rotary got involved with the eradication of polio, there were 1,000 new cases every day, world-wide.  Today, polio is minimally active in a few countries.  The goal, of course, is total eradication as was done with smallpox.  If all of the polio virus is not eradicated, it would take just 10 years for it to flourish once again, world-wide.

It would polio-updatebe, as Carolyn said, just a plane ride away [from the US].  Rotary International is determined to finish off this disease, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  Total eradication is measured by no new cases for three years; vaccination would continue for 10 years beyond that.

Contributions can be made directly to Rotary International at http://www.endpolio.org or contribute to the Polio Eradication campaign by playing the “Puttin-Out-Polio” golf game at the September 24th Avon Home Depot Safety Fair and the October 6th Avon Lake Great Pizza Bake-off.

North Coast Rotary Club’s membership has grown from 21 members in 2013 to 35 as of today.  Every week at our meetings or events, we share our Rotary stories with guests in hopes of their support as members or friends.  Membership growth has allowed us to take on more projects and will help our Club make more financial contributions to the community and region.

North Coast Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Belgium

Inna Nikolova, a senior at Brookside High School, attended her first Rotary Club Meeting in Belgium her host country for this school year.  (Its customary to exchange Club Flags.)  When asked why she sought the exchange program, Inna said “The fact that I will come back completely fluent in another language is something that will benefit me in the future, especially in my career since I plan to major in International Relations.”  Inna had the support of her family, fellow students at the North Coast Interact Club, and Brookside High School teachers and staff.  To pay for her travel expenses, Inna worked at Wal-Mart in Avon, held fundraisers at Brookside and received contributions from North Coast Rotary Club and Interact Club and an anonymous donor.  We are very excited for her.  She promises to keep us updated as her adventure continues.rotary youth exchange 3
