Nura Afaneh, Leah Musall, Sydney Ryan and Elizabeth White were awarded $1000 scholarships each for their “Service Above Self.” Their leadership roles and service to others included captaining various sports teams, President of the Avon Lake Choir program, President of BHS National Honor Society, Treasurer of Interact Service Club, volunteering at St. Mary of the Woods, Genesis House, sponsoring a club for mental health awareness and more.
Congratulations to these graduates from Avon, Avon Lake and Brookside High Schools who stood out among the 53 well-qualified applicants for the North Coast Rotary scholarships.
In a separate application process, Gabriel Marsala was awarded a $1000 scholarship by Marilyn Weems for her interest in continuing to study and learn the French language.
North Coast Rotary Foundation is pleased to award scholarships to three graduating Brookside High School seniors, who were the top-qualifiers among a number of applicants.
Natalie Baughman is awarded the Service Above Self Scholarship and Jennie Phan is awarded the North Coast Rotary Interact Scholarship. Connor Fields is awarded the North Coast Rotary Brookside STRIVE Scholarship.
Natalie and Jennie presented well-written essays describing their college plans, career goals, scholastic performance and volunteer service. Jennie also highlighted her 4 years of successful participation in Rotary’s Youth Program, Interact.
Connor was jointly selected by the STRIVE Coordinator and Brookside’s Guidance Office upon submission of his essay. Connor is recognized for his increasing commitment to furthering his education and his active participation in the Brookside Rotary STRIVE Program.

North Coast Rotary thanks the Avon School Administration – Ben Hodge, Kristina Buller, and Rob Woods; the Avon Music Boosters; and Avon students, families and friends for your support at North Coast Rotary’s Great Pizza Bake-Off!
Everyone seemed to enjoy the varied pizza samples from Cafe Piccolo, Donatos, D’Tutanelli’s, Marco’s, Masters, Neechi’s and Pizza Hut and especially the generously donated donuts from Peace, Love and Little Donuts.
Funds raised will be used for multiple youth initiatives including leadership seminars, speech and writing contests, international youth exchange, scholarships and other programs.
North Coast Rotary thanks the over 400 guests who joined us for the 3rd annual Great Pizza Bake-off at Avon High School on Thursday February 8th. Another great event with exceptional pizza to sample, ice cream from Mitchell’s, and cookies from Sprenger.
The Bake-Off was followed by the well-attended Fusion Concert!
Bake-Off guests voted for their favorite pizzas in a variety of categories, and the winners were:
Thank you to all of our supportive Pizzerias, to Avon High School, especially the Evening’s Emcee Rob Woods, to Assistant Superintendent Ben Hodge, to Sprenger Health Care for providing the delicious dessert cookies, to Mitchell’s ice cream and to the North Coast Interact Club who served drinks and desserts, and helped youngsters with Putting-Out-Polio.
Three of our six Scholarship Winners joined our Rotary Club Meeting to describe their future plans.
Hailey Acosta, winning the Jane Kuzman Memorial Scholarship at Avon High School will attend Otterbein College and major in nursing. Pierce Morgan, an Interact Scholarship winner from Brookside will attend Kent State University, majoring in fashion merchandising. Tyler Simons, Scholarship Winner from Avon Lake High School will attend The Ohio State University, majoring in engineering and French.
