Seven years ago, then President Doug Maurer brought the Student of the Month program to North Coast Rotary. Rotarians Gina Eschke, Ben Hodge and Bob Scott representing their respective school systems, developed the criteria: to recognize students who make a difference, who go above and beyond and often are “unsung heroes” .
Today, the program is coordinated by Assistant Superintendent Jen Fitch at Avon, Assistant Superintendent Jack Dibee and Assistant Principal Maria Gingo at Avon Lake, and Principal Emily Adkins and Val Rion at Brookside. Each student is presented with a Certificate of Recognition, a Student of the Month pin (new in ’23-‘24), a $20 gift card to a local pizzeria and gift passes to Main Event who is a co-sponsor of the program by the North Coast Rotary Club President. Each student has an opportunity to speak to the Rotary Club members about what “service above self” means to them.
Each month typically from October through April, at a Rotary meeting, Program Coordinators introduce their student, describe why they were selected then give the student an opportunity to tell everyone a little about themselves.
If you want to hear stories that will make you proud of our students in Avon, Avon Lake and Brookside schools, please join us at a meeting or Zoom in. Our meeting schedule and Zoom information follows:
