North Coast Rotary Club and the Interact Club met with interested parents and students at Brookside High School’s Open House last week. More than twenty students expressed interest in learning more about the Interact Club.

October 1st – The Avon Lake Great Pizza Bake-Off!!
Preparations for this well-attended event are underway, as Rotarians Doug Maurer and Rebecca Russell are enlisting pizza merchants to join in this friendly competition. Culinary students from the Lorain County Joint Vocational School will once again be preparing their specialty desserts! Tickets for the all-you-can-eat event will remain at $10 per adult and $5 per child and will be available for pre-sale next week. Pictures below are from last year’s event.

Free to Be Project
Recently, Gail Stumpauzer, CEO of the Free to Be Project met with the Rotary Club to explain their mission to help women and girls know and appreciate their own unique talents and gifts and to realize that they are WORTHY! Their organization is led by a volunteer group and was founded in honor of Margeau Stumphauzer, a young woman who fought feelings of inadequacy, not because she lacked talent or beauty, but because of the messages coming at her from so many outside influences. October 31st will be the 4th annual day of “DISCOVERING You” with a special session for girls ages 10 – 15. More information is available at Free 2 Be Project Discovering You
Rotary Supports the Annual Avon Heritage Duck Tape Parade Saturday June 20
“Fun in the Sun” is this year’s parade theme and once again the Avon/Avon Lake Rotary Club will be there. Recognizing that parade participants gather and organize early in the morning prior to the start of the parade, the club will be selling donuts and drinks from 7:30 AM till the parade starts. Proceeds are used for Youth Initiatives and support for other Community Services.

Rotary Club Sends 3 Brookside Students to World Community Workshop
“Brazil: Emerging Global Leader” was the topic of this three-day workshop for high-school students designed to help participants learn about the history, customs, economic and political issues of a selected region of the world. Students participated in small group discussions and experienced hands-on activities. In addition, guest speakers shared their stories about life in different countries. The Rotary Club sponsored 3 students from Brookside High School to participate in the May 7 – May 9 program in Defiance, Ohio. They will be sharing their experiences with the Rotary Club on Tuesday May 26th at their 7:30 AM meeting.
Dresses from pillow cases for girls in Africa
On Tuesday, November 13, Father Don Dunson and County Prosecutor Lyn Travis were pleased to receive 75 dresses from the Avon Avon Lake Rotary Club yesterday. Fr. Don and Attorney Travis will be traveling to Uganda in December. Continue reading
